2024 ROAD SAFETY PLAN SYNOPSIS UPDATE FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE ISLAND OF MAURITIUS

Happy New Year Everyone!

Back in 2013 working with Mr Brian Holiday DAGA prepared a Road Safety Plan Synopsis for the Government of the Island of Mauritius entitled “What is Road Safety Engineering and How Can it Help to Reduce Road Collisions in Mauritius”. The plan covered all the basics of Road Safety Engineering and made the following Recommendations:-

1/ That the proposed international race track be approved for implementation by the Mauritian Government and that its introduction be utilized to further the cause of Road Safety Education and Training throughout the island through a collaborative approach with the bid team.

2/ That the Mauritian Government commission the bid team to engage the services of DAGA Limited to provide a detailed Road Safety Plan of Action for the island as a whole encompassing a National and Regional Collision Reduction Programme and Strategy to tie in with the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety 2011 – 2020. Such a plan should set targeted reductions in collisions to be achieved by 2020.

3/ That the proposed Road Safety Plan in (2) above target specific road user groups that are over represented in road collisions through a combination of Education, Engineering and Enforcement with particular emphasis on motorcyclists, young drivers and child pedestrians.

4/ That the Mauritian Government commission the bid team to engage the services of DAGA Limited to produce a report of the benefits of Road Safety Audit as a tool towards achieving better collision prevention for new and redesigned road layouts with a view to then providing training and guidance for locally based Road Safety Auditors.

The plan appeared to be well received at the time and here at DAGA we looked forward to extending our Road Safety Engineering expertise to the island with a view to having a major impact on road collisions there which number some 160 fatal collisions per year from a population of just 1.3 million people! However, weeks turned into month and months into years and nothing much happened, then out of the blue just before Christmas 2023 Mr Holiday contacted me to tell me that the new Transport Minister of Mauritius was now keen to see the report updated and implemented. So just after Christmas I met Mr Brian Holiday at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, for dinner and a chat about the new project (see below) it just goes to show that even after many years a project that you thought was over can come back to life again lol 😊

Thinking about my late father and recent world events

Perhaps this isn’t the place… but watching the news about Ukraine and thinking of my Dad, Dick Graham today😥…. Its three years to the day since we said goodbye to him with a Spitfire Tribute over his funeral cortege in Peasedown St John to mark his service with 165 and 615 Squadron Royal Air Force from 1943 – 61. He was in his 93rd year. I thought his generation were the last to have to fight for freedom. Will we never learn…. God bless you Dad x

Supporting BLESMA Christmas 2020

2020 was a challenging one for everyone; home-schooling, wearing masks, Zoom-ing and home-working from our living rooms, looking after our loved ones and trying to keep ourselves safe. However, we made it through 2020,  and we will continue to work hard for our clients into 2021!

For Christmas 2020 instead of sending Christmas gifts of appreciation to our valued clients and colleagues, as we normally do every year we made a donation to charity instead. Our chosen charity for this Christmas 2020 is called Blesma (blesma.org).

‘’Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is a national charity. It serves those who lose limbs or the use of limbs, or one or both eyes in service or as a result of service in Her Majesty’s Forces. It also serves ex-Service men and women who lose limbs or eyes after service or the use of limbs through physical trauma. Whilst the majority of its Members are veterans, a number are still serving. The Association also supports dependents of its Members, particularly their widows, widowers or surviving partners. The Association is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association adopted in June 2016.’’

During this difficult year limbless Ex-service men and women and their families have needed more support than ever before. We appreciate the business of our clients and we believe a donation in the name of our clients along with (DAGA) will resonate with those who believe in helping those who are more vulnerable in our society.

Membership of the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, London December 2020

Following my Road Safety work internationally with the teaching of the first 20 IHE CPD approved Road Safety Auditors for The Engineering Institute of Thailand, and my work preparing a Road Safety Plan for The Government of the Island of Mauritius, in January 2020, I was proposed and seconded by two associates for Membership of The Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, London in order to further promote Road Safety nationally and internationally through the Club, particularly given its association with F1 and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation that promotes road safety worldwide. Following my application in January 2020 this culminated in Zoom meeting with the Elections Committee on 9th December 2020 where I was amongst other issues questioned about my Road Safety Engineering work and how this might be of benefit to the Club and its Members. Following this interview my application was successful and I was admitted as a Member on 23 December 2020. During my preparation for interview I was able to fully research and understand the link between the RAC, F1 and the FIA and how the latter supports global Road Safety projects which is of great interest to me as a Road Safety Engineer. Now that I am a Member of the RAC I will use my knowledge to further support the Clubs association with the FIA and offer my services to support their ongoing Road Safety projects.

The Cotswold Run 20th September 2020 by The Classic and Historic Vehicle Club in Support of Children’s Hospice South West

Like many Road Safety and Traffic Engineers I have an interest in classic vehicles and last year acquired another Jaguar 420G to replace my previous 420G (RUBY) which I sold. Like Ruby my new 420G affectionately known as (Mr Shelby) by my family is a 1968 model, but this time in black over silver grey with a red leather interior (see below). So it was a pleasure once again to support the Classic and Historic Vehicle Club on their Cotswold run on the 20th September 2020 in support of Children’s Hospice South West on a 95 mile tour around the Cotswolds. I can say my family and I had a great day out in the sunshine despite the ongoing Covid 19 restrictions and Mr Shelby performed beautifully!

Best wishes,

Membership of The Institute of Engineering and Technology

To gain Membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology in January 2020 I had to submit an application form along with researching a body of evidence of my career in Engineering to date. In March 2020 I was notified that I had been successful in gaining Membership (MIET). As more and more technology enters the field of Road Safety Engineering, Membership of the IET will be of benefit to me as it will allow me to keep up to date with new developments in Road safety related technology.

Covid 19 and DAGA Road Safety Audit Services

Like all of you we here at DAGA are trying to manage our way through an unprecedented  time in our countries history as we all adjust to working alongside the Government lockdown put in place to help slow the rate of infection of this terrible Covid 19 virus which has already sadly taken so many lives in the UK and worldwide.

Nonetheless, as a niche consultancy it has been possible to maintain Government advice on social distancing by utilising only family members of the team here at DAGA. As such, we are still able to follow the published advice and at the same time provide a full Road Safety Audit Service. So should you require Road Safety Audit services please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Veronica on the following numbers:

David Graham 07833 645253

Veronica Graham 07749 709102

My very best wishes to you all.

Stay safe!

Mendip Vintage and Classic Tour 12/05/19 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

Gangster jagAs I look out of my office window the snow is melting on what was something of a blizzard weekend with the 1st February 2019 ushered in with some real winter weather.  As such, myself and my family were confined to staying at home and not venturing onto the road network for two days (No School! The children were so disappointed, NOT!). Instead we started with a modern family weekend where everyone sits in the same room but operates their respective I pad or I phone and does not communicate with anyone else by voice! maybe I’m getting old but I eventually managed to break through to my family with the prospect of a log fire and lunch!. After lunch on checking my email I discovered that I had been invited to submit an entry for the forthcoming Mendip Vintage and Classic Tour  on 12/05/19. The ‘Mendip Run’ as it is known locally is a tour of classic motor vehicles that takes place every May. This year it will once again be in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Considering the freezing cold weather and the fact that such a worthy cause would benefit I filled in my application straight away and rushed down to the post box in the snow to post it to the organisers.

Like many Road Safety and Traffic Engineers I have an interest in classic vehicles  and recently acquired a  1968 Jaguar 420 G back in October 2018 (see pic). She is affectionately known as ‘RUBY’ by my family for obvious reasons but will she be able to cope with the 85 mile tour? I think she will  as shes in rather good shape for a 50 year old car. Anyway I look forward to supporting this event and hope that May will bring with it some lovely spring weather and that our blizzard weekend will be but a distant memory by then.

Best wishes,

David Graham

International Symposium on Road Safety in Thailand, Bangkok 29th September 2017

I had the honour of being invited to speak at the International Symposium on Road Safety in Thailand at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok on 29th September 2017 which was officially opened by the Vice Minister of Transport Mr Teerapong Rodprasert who kindly presented me with a gift to commemorate the occasion (pictured).

The symposium saw presentations from fellow Road Safety professionals from Australia, Japan and The Netherlands and of course myself from the UK. I hope that  the symposium will further advance the cause for better road Safety in the Kingdom of Thailand as delegates  learn from what has already been achieved around the world to improve Road Safety.
